Selecting a small pet for your young child can be a very challenging thing. I recently read an article that said a Guinea Pig made a great “starter” pet for smaller kids. Isn't this little guy to the left sooo cute.
As small pets go, guinea pigs — also known as cavies — are virtual giants. In fact, each of the 13 guinea pig breeds recognized by the American Cavy Breeders Association can weigh up to 3 pounds or 1,360 grams (that's a lot compared to a parakeet). They come in several colors and patterns, and can have short or long hair…and live up to 5 to 10 years.
So after you get his portable enclosure where your Guinea Pig can explore his environment safely, you start to think about what to feed this pig… a very important detail for all pets big, small or super small. Well I found this healthy natural, Sunseed SUNaturals Guinea Pig Food, that is packed with tons of good stuff and made in the USA…difficult to find by the way. This 2.75lb bag on the right, was on on wag.com for $8.99, where it got great reviews, but the food is available on several different sites, so you have choices, something that is always important.
Oh by the way, did you know that Guinea Pigs are actually from South Africa and that they aren't a pig at all? Either way the little ones are gonna love having one of their very own for a pet. Enjoy!
